Completion and dedication
July 5, 2002
We enjoyed a great final day of construction. We spent the day on all the finishing touches -- final plumbing and cabinet work, doorknobs, deadbolts, dryer vents, touch-up caulking and paint. All the appliances were installed, and then the furniture was brought in. With the house ready, we began breaking down our equipment and supplies, loading the truck, and cleaning up our construction debris.
At 3:00 p.m., we began the dedication ceremony and turned over the keys to Mr. Siler and his family. Mr. Siler expressed his thanks, and was clearly moved. His son promised to help build a house next summer.
The week was an incredible experience for all of us. We shared the joy of hard work for God's purposes. We enjoyed fellowship. Novices learned from more experiences workers, who themselves enjoyed sharing the skills they had learned in earlier years here.
The five day schedule gave more time for teaching, more time to get to know the Siler family, more time to get to know each other better.
We return with renewed appreciation of the gifts God has given each of us. We are grateful for the chance to give a family a new home, and we are grateful that the Lord has made hard work so much fun.
The youth deserve special recognition. They worked incredibly hard, and showed good spirit throughout. The hotel manager visited the site and commented, "Those who bemoan the state of youth today should come out here for a day."
We all want to give thanks to Roger, Wes, and Barbie whose months and months of advance work and planning makes it possible for the rest of us to participate. We also thank those at home who kept us in your prayers. We hope the these reports help you share a bit of the experience we had here.
