New York Mission Trip

July 16 - 23, 2005

Our mission team is back from New York City, and it was an amazing week. There are so many stories to tell and so little space to write this article. Every member of our church has reason to be exceedingly proud of the entire mission team. Each youth and adult went well beyond what was expected of them, and God blessed us with a wonderful week. You will hear many of the stories in coming weeks, but I thought an overview might be helpful.

Day Camp

The majority of our time was spent in the park at the Albany Homes neighborhood in the middle of Brooklyn. Our team ran the third week of a five-week day camp for a local church, Greater Restoration Baptist Church. The camp ran from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. each day, Monday through Friday. The youth had prepared games, Bible studies, crafts, recreation, and a variety of other activities for approximately 45 neighborhood children. While the activities where an important part of the week, the relationship our kids made with the day campers proved to be the most meaningful part of the week. By the middle of the first morning, our team members had already shown love and were receiving love as well. Lives for both groups had been changed by the end of the week, and it was a blessing from God.

Worship

During several of the nights in New York, we were able to experience worship along with other churches that had come to NYC. It was a powerful encounter with God as we joined together with churches from Alabama, North Carolina, and Massachusetts. One of the best times of worship is when we traveled to Brooklyn Tabernacle Church which was close to where we were staying. It was a completely different worship experience than we were used to, and God taught us the value of knowing how different people worship. We encountered God in each worship service. There are many other stories to come, and each member of our church has much to celebrate. I look forward to seeing what God does with what happened in NYC.
