The following report is from Advance Team member Eva Wells:
The Advance Team left College Park on April 6, at 5:00 a.m. for Williamsburg, Kentucky. We felt the mission of the church was clear. Many people ask why we go so far away for a mission project. College Park has broadened its definition of community to include a section of Kentucky in an impoverished area that was once supported by coal mining. Mt. Outreach is designed to help relieve the physical deficiencies of poverty and to educate some to gain a better knowledge of self-reliance. It is gratifying to represent a church that is willing and enthusiastic for this project. We were met at Cumberland College by their director and some students who would be involved with our volunteers this summer. After lunch in the college cafeteria, we were taken to the home site. This year, we will be building a home for Noel Powers and his three children. Noel is a single father who works every day. Fortunately, his mother lives next door and can care for the children.
Noel is 35 years old, and his children are Tyler, age 9, Hannah, age 7, and Noah, age 4. They are living in an old trailer that has burned on one end. The electricity does not work on either end, the plumbing is bad in the bathroom, and the roof leaks. The good news is that the land is level and is very large which will mean we will have plenty of parking space. Our team feels this is a worthy project for a family in need. We met the family at dinner and were very impressed with Noel and his children, who were very polite and well behaved. We had a wonderful trip and are grateful to our driver, Wilbert McBride, for taking care of every detail.
